I chose to study Japanese mainly because of my major. I am a graduate student majoring in modern Chinese literature, and the Chinese literature during the modern period is greatly influenced by Japanese writers and thinkers. For example, one of the founding fathers of modern Chinese literature, Lu Xun, who went abroad and studied in Japan as a medical school student, introduced into China many "state of the art" literary theories as well as philosophical thoughts after he came back. Actually, many writers during that period were also important translators, translating significant Japanese masterpieces into Chinese. As a result, I think I need to learn Japanese so as to study those modern writers of China.
